5 Questions I Want Beginners to Ask in Muay Thai Class

Updated: 1 day ago
You are allowed to ask questions. In fact, I would rather you ask than spend a whole round repeating something you do not understand. You do not need the right terminology or a background in martial arts. Tell your coach what feels confusing.

1. Where should my weight be?
If you feel off balance, start here. Before adding speed, check your stance and whether you can return to it after the movement. A technique is unfinished if you cannot recover your position.
2. What is the one correction I should focus on?
Trying to fix five things at once can leave you fixing none of them. Ask for one clear priority and work on it for the next round. Let the basics become familiar before adding more.
3. How much force should I use in this drill?
A technical drill and a hard pad round have different purposes. Check the instruction with your coach and communicate with your partner. Never assume that someone wants more contact because they have more experience.
4. How do I help my partner learn?
Holding pads is a skill too. Ask about the target, distance and pace. Your job is to support the drill, give your partner a consistent target and listen when something needs adjusting.
5. What should I practise before the next class?
Keep the answer manageable. It might be footwork, a controlled return to stance or simply remembering the combination. Ask which movements are appropriate to practise alone; partner work needs proper instruction.
